Against the tide...
The closing years of the Vietnam war saw the extensive, and underreported, use of armored forces by the ARVN and PAVN. Author Chris McNab examines the showdown between the ARVN's M-41 Walker Bulldog light tank and the PAVN T-54 main battle tank as an example of that use. The analysis focuses on armored warfare in the context of LAM SON 719 and the 1972 Easter Offensive. The author methodically walks the reader up through the basics of the two tanks and the situation in Vietnam in 1971 and 1972. There are plenty of technical details for the interested reader. An extended discussion of LAM SON 719 and the Easter Offensive is followed by an even-handed statistical analysis with what may be surprising results to some readers. The narrative is nicely supported with lots of period photographs and modern illustrations. Well recommended to the student of armored warfare.

Packaging Fail
While book arrive as scheduled, book has a significant permanent crease running from top right to bottom left, will not lay flat. Not what I want/expect for a new book. Delivered in “soft” packaging by person driving a Prime vechile.

Lots of details
Well written book, excellent artwork, good details in drawings or interiors. Great history if you're a fan of either fighting vehicle!

Two Cold War tanks meet in combat...
The common picture most people have of combat in Vietnam is American soldiers looking for Viet Cong in the jungle. In fact, tanks had a role too at the hands of PAVN and ARVN, fighting on behalf of the Communists and the Free World, respectively. The Walker Bulldog, the light tank of the U.S. Army's New Look, was obsolete when the Republic of Vietnam was provided the machines to give ARVN an armor capability. Likewise, the Soviets and the Chicoms provided T-54 tanks (and their Type 59 cousins) to the North Vietnamese in order to give them a more robust conventional punch in the south. Fighting in 1971 and 1972 would show that both vehicles had technical advantages but crew training and tactics would determine which side won. Very well-written and illustrated!

Tanks a lot
Library book. No purchase. Never having been in the military I am probably not the best source for a really good review of this book. I did enjoy it. Thought it was interesting and well written. Thought it was also well organized. A topic I seldom think about when I think about Viet Nam. Interesting spin and insight into the conflict from the point of view of one aspect of the war. Does portray the ARVN as being better soldiers and more capable than other books I have read. Also treats the PAVN fairly, at least in my opinion. Insightful and interesting.

A good treament of a little-known series of tank battles
This is one of those typical Osprey treatments of a little-known series of small scale tank battles in Vietnam, all the more interesting because on paper the light M41 Bulldog should have stood little chance against a T-54. It didn't work out like that and this work explains why in some detail. A very good buy for anyone interested in the period.

Enjoyed this read but.....
Can't fault this duel edition,in fact the whole series is very interesting, but there never seems be enough about actual fighting experiences. Also could those folk responsible for the format size of the otherwise great illustrations return them to a recent size before soon is required.Thank you.

An Inside Story Not Been Told Before
This is a good book with much detail, told me something I never really knew about the Vietnam War, was a bit suprised though when author stated that people thought armour was impossible to use, given (a) experience of British America and Japan in WW2, (b) not to mention the French themselves in 'Indochina' in 1950's. I would also have liked to hear more about the direct experiences of the PAAF tankers themselves

Informative
A well written book but lacks and real detail of the combat use of either tank, not much to do with a Duel!
