Controlling the Roman Army: Standards and their bearers...
In the centuries before radios and field telephones, never mind satellite comms, armies helped control the movements of their troop formations through devices such as regimental and national colors. For the army of the late Roman Empire, standards and their bearers played a key role in rallying and maneuvering the legions. Experienced historian Raffaele D'Amato has a deep-dive on the subject in this Osprey Elite Series book.As the author demonstrates in a thoughtful but concise narrative, Roman standards and their bearers evolved with the times. Devices on the standards reflected the preferences of Roman Emperors, including the impact of Christianity, but also the inclusion in the army of new peoples from the fringes of the Empire. The author has done an impressive job assembling the often fragmentary evidence. The text is loaded with photographs of surviving standards and their representation in ancient art, along with nicely done illustrations of what they may have looked liked in real life. The author pays attention along the way to the bearers of these standards, who had their own hierarchy and uniforms within the military service of Rome. Recommended to the student of the Roman Army; the general reader may find the topic a bit challenging to follow.
