Great companion to take to the Caribbean
After seeing my first Christmas tree worm, I was hooked on snorkeling and scuba and longing to learn more about the undersea world. "Reef Fish" is the best book I have found for identifying fish in the Caribbean, Bahamas and Florida. It relies on color photographs of each species, with descriptions and information on where they can be found and how they react to divers. This book is one of a three part series. The other two are "Reef Creatures" and "Reef Coral". Each stands on its own, but it is terrific to have all three. I first became aware of the series when diving in Tortola. The dive operator kept a set in a plastic bin on the dive boat. The authors have recently released a lighter travel version that compresses the info and weighs a lot less, the better to fit in a suitcase.

Small version of the best guide. Go ahead and get the full sized version.
This is a shortened version of the classic guide. It is outstanding with lots of photos of each fish species. Wish I had gotten the full sized version though

perfect companion when you dont want to carry the full set
its great for traveling light. Binder could be stronger, just be careful not to beat on it.

I would have given it 5 stars if it were just a little bigger and included "creatures" like shrimps, worms
I have the larger fish ID books by Paul Humann but they are kind of heavy to fly with. This book is definitely smaller and will be easier to travel with. I would have given it 5 stars if it were just a little bigger and included "creatures" like shrimps, worms, etc...

Great travel ID guide
Excellent and comprehensive guide to the fish of the Caribbean!Follows on from the larger edition by Humann and Deloach but is just a more compact size!Certainly reduced the weight of my hand-luggage when I went on a marine expedition for 4 weeks, of which this was listed as an essential item! The waterproof cover also makes it a great guide to bring on the boats without the worry of damaging it.The pictures are clear and features are listed about each fish, allowing you to distinguish between more similar species. There wasn't one fish I saw whilst diving that wasn't in this book!An essential for any budding marine biologist or diver with an interest in identification!Suitable for the beginner or advanced.

The book has some excellent points, notably arrows indicating the identifying features of ...
I required this book to identify reef fish snorkeling in Cuba, where I returned from today. The Jibacoa reef was teeming with fish, though damaged by Hurricane Irma, it is recovering. At least 20% of the fish seen were unidentifiable in this book. The book has some excellent points, notably arrows indicating the identifying features of the fish, juvenile differences and the commonality of where the fish habitats are. The first book received (with a spiral binder,) fell apart the day I got it, I feel the spiral column used is too small for the number of pages. The replacement copy, received as I was leaving, I ensured first that all the ends of the spiral were tucked through all the pages and was handled delecately. After a few days in use, it started to unravel and was carefully put back together.

No.....
Definitely not worthwhile. I had the original version and wanted this as a purchase for a friend. The quality was dreadful (worse than an old photocopier!). The upside was that Amazon were quick and efficient on return/refund. Stick to the original book -it's excellent.

An excellent and comprehensive guide to Caribbean reef fish
An excellent and comprehensive guide to Caribbean reef fish.Photos are fantastic and there is not a single fish I could not find in this book. The only improvement I could suggest would be to make the book a little hardier and perhaps with water proof pages.I found looking after such lovely book on a wet sailing boat a bit of a challenge.Otherwise- top quality!
