Does a good job replacing the vintage Agfa 8X Lupe
The Archive uses a number of loupes spread around the facility. Our loupes seem to have legs as they are always wandering off and getting lost. So we are in need of a constant supply of high quality budget priced loupes. Clean vintage Agfa 8X Lupes are getting very hard to find, so we were in search of a replacement loupe to adopt. The vintage Agfa 8X Lupe was probably the best budget priced loupe ever made. (Note: Agfa spells loupe as lupe) The vintage Agfa 8X Lupe was the standard for loupe excellence in the graphic arts industry in the 1970's - 1980's and beyond. And note, the modern day Agfa Lupe is not the same optical quality as the vintage model. Many of the competition's loupes need to be screw focused or raised off the subject to focus them. Some of the loupes work better if you use them upside down. Others won't yield a sharp image no matter what position they are in. There is a wide range of budget priced loupes out there and they are all different as to sharpness and field of view. The vintage Agfa 8X Lupe image is sharp when you put it flat on an object and focus is perfect as-is. An issue with some of these adjustable loupes is; even if you adjust the focus it wont stay put. The focus is loose as a goose. Also important is the Agfa's wide field of view which makes it easy to use, which is especially important for cine' film work in the Small Gauge Film Archive. When using a loupe in the wet darkroom for process camera work you needed a loupe that was fast to focus, didn't need adjustments and could be gripped with a wet hand. The vintage Agfa Lupe fit the bill perfectly. The Carson LumiLoupe 10X Stand Magnifier #LL-10 is a suitable budget priced replacement for the vintage Agfa 8x Lupe. It has very good sharpness and wide field of view. I'd judge it about 90% or more as good as a vintage Agfa 8X Lupe. Before we adopted them in the Archive I purchased 3 of the Carson LL-10's to test...all 3 were the same high quality view when it came to sharpness. Although the ergonomics are not as good as the Agfa 8X Lupe, the Carson has an indentation that allows for some grip control. But if you don't hit the indentation it can slip out of your hands due to its slope design. Before settling on the Carson LL-10 we tried 14 other budget priced loupes and magnifiers. None could compare to the Carson LL-10 for all the qualities we needed in a loupe. Daniel D. Teoli Jr. Archival Collection

Better than the price!
This is better than the price would indicate, but it certainly isn't an expensive, high-quality loupe. It IS an exceptional value though. For the average to above average user, I think this would work well. I use mine to view slides and negatives on a light table and it functions very well. It magnifies well enough for me to discern the differences between same subject shots in color negatives.(As a bonus, my 2nd grader LOVED looking at an inchworm under it too! The clear area under the eyepiece/magnifier allows light through which helped with my son's excitement over science and living things...AND, it was cheap enough, that I wasn't worried about him ruining it.)You get what you pay for usually...but, in my opinion, you're getting more quality than the price usually allows. To put it in car terms...you're getting a Camry for a Corolla price. You definitely are not getting the Avalon-for-Corolla-money deal of a lifetime with this purchase...if that is your aim, you'll be disappointed.

Looks big
This is a great tool. How many times have you looked for something so small it was hard to see. You ladies know what I’m talking about. This can make anything look bigger even if you only need it for a one night stand.

I should've heeded the warnings of others!
I read time and time again here that this magnifier's image was so small making it practically useless to use for anything larger than a date imprint on a dime (pretty small footprint for sure!). To read the date one would still have to move this magnifier to capture, in focus, the date on a dime.At the same time I purchased a 5x magnifier of the same manufacturer, I can't say enough about that one! It's very large, with a large magnified image, with plenty of are for adding more light to the subject you're wishing to magnify. Both this one, and the 5x I just spoke about, are very quality made, in my humble opinion. If you're wishing to magnify a symbol on a watchband that's really small, then this is your tool! But if you're needing to blow up anything with a larger footprint, then I say continue to shop for something with a slightly larger footprint.

Clear Magnification
Works well without an LED light installed if a good nearby light is provided and the magnified images are CLEAR to the edges ~ thanks!
