The Tach works OK with two wire that attach to the engine. The red lead wire is wrapped around your plug wire. It is a solid copper wire and can be easily pulled tight and stays without a spot tie installed. The white wire goes to ground and has a half moon clip designed to slip under a convenient bolt. This can be hard to find on a mostly plastic chain saw and can be deformed easily if over tighten. I added a small alligator clip and it worked fine. It reads a little slow so let it stabilize a second or two to get a good reading.

This tach worked great for my needs. I used it on a 1987 Honda Magna to do the idle drop test (set pilots for all 4 carbs) and to assist with synchronization as well. The tach itself read steadily and was not bouncing around. Only real downside I see is that the battery does not seem to be replaceable. Another post mentioned alligator clips to be useful but I might only agree if it was for temporary usage like my situation was. Red wire wraps around ignition wire as close to the cap as possible and white wire goes to ground.

Worked as expected. Easy to use. I bought this to time a chainsaw, and it made the job foolproof.

Mounted on my boat to keep track of engine hours. Works great and easy to install. The tach function appears to be accurate on my 4.3 V6
