Definitely recommend this purchase

Definitely recommend this purchase! It makes the tailgate much easier to raise and lower. Well worth the money.Installation took less than 20 minutes from start to finish for me. I am a very handy person. Some say installation can be done with one person. I am sure this is true, however I highly recommend two fairly strong individuals to maneuver the tailgate and one more person to guide the EASYLIFT bar into place. You will only need the helpers for maybe 5 minutes. This will be safer for you and you will be less likely to damage your truck. The written instructions were more complex than the actual process in my opinion. The Template is okay but why not just use the actual bar to mark your holes. Quicker, easier, and more accurate (Do read the information provided on the template!). Hold the bar in place as shown in the picture - even with the top of the pivot point on the tail gate and mark your hole. Some have complained about a grinding noise when opening or closing the tailgate. Just make sure the EASYLIFT bar is not rubbing the edge when you mark your spot to drill hole A. Insert the EASYLIFT into hole A as described in the instructions AND THEN mark hole B. Be sure to look at the template to determine how close to the edge you should drill for your truck (Dodge, Chevy, Ford, etc.).This is the time when you should really get two helpers to remove the tailgate. Drill hole B. Partially insert the rod and have your helpers rotate the tailgate according to instructions as you guide the rod in all the way to the mark on the bar. Don't force it. (A few reviewers recommend inserting the bar at point B first and then point A after marking and drilling the holes. I can see this being easier and you may want to consider it.) A little patients and a few minutes (and two helpers) will get you to the sweet spot. This is the only tricky part in the entire installation. Make one final check to ensure your marks at hole A and B are still properly aligned as you reinstall the tailgate. Many reviews address the one finger claim or the tailgate not fully lowering. This is going to depend on the weight of your tailgate. Works like a charm on my heavy 04 Dodge Ram 1500 tailgate. Maybe not a one finger job but no more than two fingers for me.

Did it by myself

As a senior citizen owner of a 2000 GMC Sierra, I've always thought that the tailgate was too heavy. Lately I'd find myself using my knee to assist in lifting it to close. One hand operation was out of the question. After seeing TV ads for new trucks with piston assisted operation, I went on line to find something for my truck. It was quickly evident that this type of assist was affordable and easy to install, however it only aided in lowering the tailgate, and did nothing to help raise it. Then I came across the Easylift. This is exactly what I was looking for. It was a simple, inexpensive solution, and the only reservation I had was the installation. After watching several YouTube videos, I knew I could do it, and ordered one from Amazon. As it says in the instructions, and videos, you need two people and maybe even three to complete a safe installation. However after watching the videos and planning each step in advance, I was able to do it by myself. Here"s how. I backed my truck half way into the garage. Because I have a couple of exposed rafter beams, I secured two pieces of nylon rope to them, separated by the width of the tailgate, and attached a hook to the end of each at about eye level. I then took two pieces of chain (from an old swag type hanging light fixture} hung them from the hooks, and opened the other ends to make another hook, that fit into existing holes on each side of the tailgate. I was now able to completely maneuver the tailgate, simply by lifting either end up or down, as I adjusted the chain on the top hook, never having to bear the whole weight. I also put a couple of plastic trash containers (with small pieces of plywood as tops) against the rear bumper. I stood between them and was easily able to remove and lower the gate flat. Drilling the holes with the provided template was very straightforward and simple, Now, could I maneuver the gate back into place while trying to insert the end into the hole on the gate bottom. It took two attempts. So here's a tip, regardless of how many people you use. The Easylift rod inserted into the gate hole will have a tendency to hang up and not let you shift the gate to the left a couple of inches to properly seat it. So after you drill the hole, with the gate still off the truck lying flat. insert the proper end into the hole, rotate and maneuver it around the bends in the rod to the designated mark, and flat against bottom of the gate. Now you'll understand why this can be tricky if your doing the same thing while holding weight and angling the gate. Now grasp the other end of the rod and pull out away from the bottom of the gate to about a 45 degree angle. This will bend one side of the hole outward, the other side inward, and shape the opening so the rod slips in easily and pivots without getting hung up. So on my second attempt after doing this---total success! On re-installing the gate, by easily moving the chain up and down on the hooks, I found that having the left side way up, the right side way down (45 degrees?) and the middle about 6" above the bed it was easy to push the rod into the hole, lower the ends while shifting the gate to the left to engage the pivot post. After completing the installation, I was just as amazed as all the other reviewers. Great product! Two fingers to lower AND lift the tailgate at a very affordable price.

Great Device

Installed on my 2012 F150. Easy install, awesome device. Installed it by myself but would be easier with 2 people. Secondary hole doesn’t need to be drilled on F150 as it has the hole for the wiring of the reverse camera so make it a breeze!

Can be installed by 1 person

The Hopkins easylift works great on my 2001 Dodge Ram 2500. I installed it myself but it would have been easier with another set of hands as recommended.

Money well spent

The tail gate on my 2000 Ram 1500 was heavy, but now very light to open and close. One person can prep, but you do need two for the install, or some lifting devise. I think the instructions are good, but do study how the torsion bar needs to be. Well worth the effort to install one of these.

They work great. Tailgate becomes featherweight

I have installed this on 4 trucks. They work great. Tailgate becomes featherweight. I wish they made an extended version for my friends 2015 chev Silverado crewcab . It has a 2" hole under tailgate for backup camera. It is right where template puts tailgate hole.
