Cultural Literacy Primer
As I was flipping through this Encyclopedia, there were a few things that immediately peeved me off ( !!! )But — if you can get your 9 year old to read a few pages of this volume every day, or every few days, & they should retain 60% of its content by The time they’re 16, they should have a solid understanding towards Cultural Literacy, which many College Graduates seem to lack. !There’s a lot missing from this book that’s important, Media sources & such, but inflaming a desire to find knowledge ‘fun’ is The Objective — And creating a vocabulary to form reasonable questions & objections to The Items where this volume may have slipped up !

Great for curious 5 year old
Grabbed this for my son who is into learning about literally everything right now. The pictures and writing has been great for answering questions and learning.

Great for language and vocabulary development!
I absolutely love DK books bc of their actual pictures vs cartoon illustrations you'll find elsewhere. I think it's very important for little Learners to learn and understand what is real before cartoon drawings. I use/d these books primarily to build vocabulary. We started off by pointing at objects and saying the name, then we advanced to us saying the name and she would find and point at the object, and then it was her repeating the words and eventually she would go through and name everything. Anyhow, I purchased this for my daughter when she was 15 months and was starting to outgrow the dk tabbed books, she knew what everything was. This book at 2.5 years is still a hit! She still loves to flip through it and explore what's on the page. Of course there are subjects above her comprehension like the history of the civil war, but the animal pages helped her realize yes, we can recognize a dog but there are many types of dogs and many types of birds etc... We never run out of words to learn with this book! And I love the teaching conversations that evolve from looking through this. I know 100% that these dk books helped develop my my daughter's advanced language skills. Of course I think she's the smartest cookie ever!! But since 2 years old she has spoken regularly in 7-9 word sentences and would even string together multiple sentences to tell stories when Google says normal development of a 2 yr old is just beginning to combine two word sentences like "baby crying." So yes, I recommended this to parents of toddlers!

Snakes!
I bought this for my nine year old niece, who apparently upon receiving it, flipped to the page with information about snakes. After she read the article, she promptly reported that she didn't like how the book made snakes sound evil and bad. Otherwise, she likes the book. So, if you are getting the book for snakes, I would advise against it! Other then that, it has a nine year old's stamp of approval!

Most important learning tool for child development
Children are our most important resource. How they develop into humane citizens is the responsibility of a global society. In this age of the internet books are considered too slow for much of their life. Enter the Picturepedia. Many people respond to visual stimuli. Images make a lasting impression on the human brain, and children especially are conducive to this kind of learning. This book is filled with knowledge of this learning experience for children and adults alike. It is a masterpiece of art and information compiled into a format understandable to the brain. My library needed updated so this book caught my attention for its graphic content. And a prize indeed it turned out to be! Every home should have a copy for educating not only a bright child, but to increase the learning skills of the average child in the 8-12 year old group. My Britannica set, Random House Colorpedia (of which this is a descendant), and Oxford world encyclopedia are now joined by this excellent guide to the universe we exist in. This is also a help to those learning English. With a generally positive view to human existence and our environment, I can strongly urge parents to get this, if they care for their children, for expanding their horizons and reducing limitations that hamper a better quality of learning for all. [note: This is the review for the 2nd edition; 2020][Add. note: I donated my pristine copy to an African family with three children ages 5-10 (?) who moved in.]
