QuickFold: A Compact, Responsive, Workhorse for Chefs and Mere Mortals Who Spiralize on the Run!
The media could not be loaded. Brieftons has super-fast shipping, outstanding products and customer service and, like its slightly larger best-selling brother, to date, the BR-05-02, this QuickFold spiralizer is a joy to operate. It is: easy to use; ultra-responsive, fast-working; compact enough for travel; and bundled with 5 super-sharp Blades that produce 3-5 foot long spirals. This spiralizer beats the hand-helds, hands down, and is one of the few in a category of spiralizers between the regular counter-top units and the hand-helds. The QuickFold works every bit as well as Brieftons’ best-selling counter-top to date, the BR-05-02. Because of its compactness (because it folds), the QuickFold is the smallest counter-top spiralizer to take while travelling.Note: The QuickFold is an ultra compact 5 Blade, foldable table-top spiralizer - a small unit, and children may be tempted to want to use it. I suggest that with its small, sharp Blades with very little Blade Plate space to hold onto and because this unit isn’t a toy, that children use the Brieftons BR-05-02, instead because it is still relatively compact, great for travel, and has a larger Blade Plate to grasp. The BR-05-02 is also good for people with hand dexterity problems. The Quickfold, though, is perfect for those adults who routinely use sharp cutting instruments. This group includes chefs, those working in the culinary arts, people who travel and do food demos, and adults who can carefully deal with changing Blades with a thin, rubber jar opener and a chopstick. (Watch me do this in my accompanying video after reading the content of the General Notes, below.)A. GENERAL NOTES:1. Take this 5-Blade spiralizer out of the box. Note that it is a small, compact unit folded into a ‘U’-shaped form. It is easy to store, and comes with 4 extra Blades (2mm, 3 mm, 5mm, and 7 mm) held in the plastic Blade Storage Caddy/ container, located under the unit. The 5th Blade is the built-in Fixed Flat Blade with the empty plastic bit inserted next to it. Because the QuickFold is small and compact, it is easy to travel with – fully assembled but folded with the Spiked Vegetable Holder and its base inserted through the middle of the ‘U’. I travel with mine in a 1 gallon ZipLock Freezer Bag; it’s a perfect fit. If you travel internationally, Customs can clearly see what is in the bag. (Be sure to carry the Brieftons Instruction Booklet inside the bag with the folded-up spiralizer, so that Customs can see what this item is.) Then, you can quickly leave the airport.2. Next, looking at both the ‘Components’ and ‘How to Get the Spiralizer Ready For Use’ sections on the inside pages of the Instruction Booklet, be sure to use a finger on the raised ‘-I’ (resembling the capitol letter ‘T’ but placed on its side, with the top bar to the right and standing). This side-leaning ‘T’ is located on the upper right-hand side of the slide, to help pull the slide up and out. Now, unfold the unit and place it on the contertop. Next, assemble the crank handle with the Vegetable Holder.3. At this point, wash the unit and all 5 Blades in warm, soapy water to remove industrial manufacturing residue. Then, dry fully before using.4. After the entire unit is dry, make sure that both parts of the main unit are flattened out onto the counter-top. Then, take some EVOO (extra virgin olive oil), grease the slide, and then reinsert it into the unit. Reapply when needed.5. *This next part is important: After making sure that all of the pads are thoroughly dry, depress both small suction pads under the blade unit at the left and then the larger, main pad (by using its large green lever, located at the front bottom right of the spiralizer bed) at the right onto a marble counter or cutting board and press down firmly. I did this 3 times until finally, I heard a ‘SWOOSH’ sound which, for my unit, meant that all 3 pads were adhering strongly to my marble cutting board. Your unit may or may not do this, but with my unit, it did. From that time, I did not ever hear another ‘SWOOSH’ sound and all 3 pads thoroughly and strongly adhere to my cutting board every time I use it. My marble cutting board weighs 11.25 pounds or 5 kilos, and it’s heavy, but the QuickFold easily lifts the entire board up, so I know that the QuikFold is strong enough to spiralize and hold itself down in order to spiralizer on my marble board.6. Note: Take care when picking up the Blade Caddy; the Blades (very nicely numbered in thickness, from 2mm, 3 mm, 5mm, and 7mm, are laid down in the Caddy but not tightly secured into it, so the Blades could tip out and fall on the floor if they are flipped over. These Blades are SHARP and, because they are small and to keep this unit compact, the BLADE plate space around the Blade is minimal. This means to handle these Blades with care. I use a thin rubber jar opener to handle Blades if I need to. I also use this thin, rubber jar opener along with a chopstick inserted under the Blade tabs when I remove each Blade. Safety is key. (Note I tried cut-resistant gloves and also rubber gloves on my hands to change blades, but both were too bulky. Thus, the rubber jar opener and the chopstick, work fine for Blade handling and removal from the Blade Holder that holds the Blades on the left-most part of the QuickFold.7. In order to spiralize, after the 3 pads are secured onto your marble counter/ board, slide the oiled Sliding Board onto the bed and lock it at the right-most edge by depressing it toward the back. The Lock is the small green lever that is located directly under the Spiked Vegetable Holder, and its square base shows its 2 positions: ‘Unlocked’ at the front of the base and ‘Locked’ at the back. The ‘Locked’ position means that the Spiked Vegetable Holder square base is locked onto the slide and the spiralizer is ready for the food to be inserted and then spiralized.8. With a sharp knife, chop off one end of most foods that will be placed onto the Steel Spindle/ Core unit, located above the Fixed Flat Blade. I poke and stab both sides of the food, so that there is a secure grabbing of the food from both ends. Then, I depress the small green Lock lever to the back, where the Lock symbol is indented on the base under the Spiked Vegetable Holder. A typical zucchini of 8” comfortably fits on the slide and can be locked. However, I use longer vegetables with the square base of the Spiked Vegetable Holder ½-way off of the Slide, and then I spiralize slowly and carefully until the square base is fully on the Slide before I lock it. This takes a bit of dexterity and going slowly at the beginning until the base is inside of the Slide area to be ‘Locked’, but it can be done. The spiralizer square Spiked Vegetable Holder base has a built-in mechanism that stops before the Vegetable Holder Spikes touch the Blade. It is also a good idea to slow down, though, before the end. In essence, the user starts, uses, and stops with speed and ease throughout the entire spiralizing process. You can chop up all cores and ends and add them to your foods.9. For me, personally, I spiralize by holding the Blade Holder plate with my left hand. This is the most comfortable way for me to spiralize. However, many people may prefer to use the green Push Handle folded up between the Spiked Vegetable Holder and the Crank Handle. Use whatever way is most comfortable for you.10. Because the Blade Plates are small, it is easier to keep the entire unit locked onto your marble board/ countertop even when Blades are changed. Be sure to neaten up all areas with a wet kleenex and a small, soft cleaning brush to especially remove colored food bits like red peppers from the unit. I arrange my food by using a certain Blade. When I remove the initial Blade, I insert another one – again with all of the foods that I want to spiralize arranged under using this Blade. The result is that all of the spirals produced on the QuickFold are like those from the other Brieftons counter-top spiralizers: 3-5 feet long! Sometimes, I use kitchen scissors to cut down the spirals, depending on the recipe that I am making. Also, sometimes, there are small curved food bits created. This is because the food item has curves in it. Therefore, to have no curves, buy only straight foods.11. To catch spirals, I either place a large, square dinner plate; a thin, plastic cutting board; or an even thinner cut-proof plastic food cutting mat next to the spiralizer to catch spirals. After that, I place the spirals in separate 1 gallon ZipLock Freezer Bags to use for immediate cooking and then the spirals are zipped shut and easily stored in the refrigerator afterwards.12. Always peel hard foods, like sweet potato, first, to make them faster to spiralize. I use the Brieftons super-sharp Vegetable Peeler (also with Japanese #420 stainless steel blades) when I peel any food. I then toss all peels into our food (as well as cores, etc.)13. To wash one of these small Blades, I run it under the faucet and use a soft little brush to clean it with dish soap. I also add baking soda to remove stains from foods like sweet potatoes; then, I rinse the Blade off. If stains persist, I repeat the dish soap and baking soda paste at 20 minute intervals until the stain is removed. Doing this tempers the cleaning process, much like tempering a Chinese wok, so that future stains tend to clean off with just one soap-paste application for cleaning. (I also use dish soap and the baking soda paste on any other plastic parts of the main unit if I need to do this.)14. After I wash these small Blades, I put them in my large, kitchen cooking spoon holder to dry. This keeps the Blades safe and out of the way until they are dry and can be put back into the Caddy or onto the QuikFold.B. COMMON FOODS TO SPIRALIZE with SOME QUICKFOLD BLADE MM NUMBERS TO USE: (Experiment on your own to find other Blade combinations that you like.)1. Onion: FLAT for spirals2. Zucchini/ Calabazza: 2-3 MM for spirals3. Bell Peppers: FLAT for spirals (Note: Use green, red, yellow, orange veg that are square only – not elongated, twisted varieties that don’t spiralize.)4. Russett/ Baking Potato: 3 MM for spirals5. Sweet Potato: 5 MM for spirals (peeled beforehand because this is a hard food)6. Carrot: 2 MM for spirals (Note: US carrots are much thinner than Asian carrots, so buy the Asians for spiralizing.)7. Cucumbers: 3 MM for spirals8. Beets: 5 MM for spirals9. Cabbage: FLAT for shreds (it doesn’t spiralize; it shreds)10. Potato Chips: FLAT11. V-shaped Chips: FLAT (with 2 ditches, pre-cut at 180 degrees apart: see the brieftons.com demo vid/ instruction sheet with graphics)C. So far, it works well.
I'm concerned about how long the sharpness of the cutting blade will last. As of now, I'm pleased with the results.

Will NEVER have to do this by hand again! 100% Satisfied
I found a new recipe for Chicken Parmesan with zucchini noodles; tried it first time using a cheese grater to make the zoodles. It worked OK, but for the second half of grating each zucchini, I felt like I would end up grating a finger or knuckle. Luckily I didn't. And the recipe turned out great! The recipe author had highly recommended her Briefton non-foldable spiralizer, and when I went to Amazon to look/find/purchase, I saw the new foldable model as highly recommended, so I bought it. It really wasn't that much more than the completely manual units that fit inside a jar & everyone hates, so I consider the price a great value.I've used it twice already, and it's fast & easy! No knuckle worries, easy to set up, works FAST and easy clean up. The left over core is only about 1/4" diameter, and it only takes about 10 seconds to spiralize a whole zucchini. My first one turned out perfectly. To fold the product you simply slide a couple of pieces off the main body, then the crank end folds up & all the parts nest into the folded upright unit. It really makes a difference in storage area - I store mine in an old 6"W X8"L plastic food storage container (the cheap disposable kind, GLAD I had one!) & it only protrudes over the top about 7"H.I have a formica countertop (yeah, I know... upgrading this fall). As long as you press down on the base of the unit directly over the main base suction cup when flipping the suction lever, it grips very sturdily. No wiggling, sliding, or coming loose when cranking out the zoodles.I haven't tried it with anything but zucchini at this point, but the unit is really sturdy & appears to be heavy enough to handle other harder foods like sweet potatoes or carrots. Even with a carrot, the remaining core would be small enough to dice & include in your salad or recipe. 1/4" isn't much.Swapping the cutting blades is really simple. And all the extra blades store in a small slotted container that slides & snaps right into the base of the unit. Out of sight, out of the way, keeps you organized so you know where to find everything without losing a bunch of small parts in your junk drawer. Or never seeing them again after they disappear into the Bermuda Kitchen Triangle! In short, this product is everything it says it is. 100% happy I bought it & expect to use it for many recipes in the future. It makes healthier eating a breeze.
